Nature

Soa Zara has established nurseries to grow timber and indigenous trees that are native to the region.

We plant commercial forests near villages to provide fuelwood and timber to local people, and we plant indigenous trees to create natural forests and wildlife habitats. The newly planted natural forests on over 100Ha of our own land are protected by Soa Zara staff from illegal logging, poaching and bush fires.

The trees planted help to stop erosion, regenerate the soil, provide shade and shelter for animals and smaller plants, and sequester CO2 to combat local but also global warming.

More than 275,000 trees have already been planted since 2017. During the Covid-19 pandemic, tourist visits and therefore the main source of income stopped completely. Although we fell far short of the planned tree planting of 250,000 annually, we continued to plant trees at our own expense. In 2020, we planted 70,000 trees, in 2021 30.000. In the rainy season months of January, February and March of 2022 we planted around 20.000 trees. For the next rainy season we hope to receive enough funding to be growing and planting more than 100.000 trees. With extended cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable development we are aiming to double the number each year to arrive at planting 1.000.000 trees in the 2025/2026 rainy season.
